The Story of Mary Slessor

Mary Slessor was a Scottish missionary to Nigeria.

Born in Aberdeen in 1848 and raised in the slums of Dundee, she worked as a weaver in one of the jute mills from the age of eleven.

As a small child, Mary's hero was David Livingstone. When she learned that Livingstone had died, she decided that she wanted to follow in his footsteps. Mary arrived in the Calabar region of Africa, aged 28, in 1876.

She gained the trust and acceptance of the local people and, as well as spreading Christianity, she promoted women's rights and protected children, helping stop the common practice of infanticide of twins.

The Story of Mary Slessor, in the style of Godly Play®, was written to help us remember this amazing woman, her love of God and people.

We have a script, resources to lend or buy, and sometime soon you can watch the story on YouTube.
